Odds of getting a birdie, one in several thousand

Tripp Isenhour, who plays on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour, has been charged with intentionally hitting and killing a red-shouldered hawk with a golf shot.
The 39-year-old Isenhour was with a film crew for "Shoot Like A Pro" on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. According to court documents, Isenhour got upset when the bird began making noise, forcing another take.

The charges of cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.

"It was unfortunate, but there'll be plenty of time for me to tell my story," Isenhour said in an interview on the Golf Channel, adding that he only meant to scare the bird away.

"It's one of regret and remorse that it happened, because I'm certainly sorry to hurt a migratory bird, or any bird, for that matter."

Officials of the Humane Society of the United States faxed commissioner Tim Finchem of the PGA Tour urging "appropriate remedial action against Isenhour up to and including fines and suspension."

Isenhour lost his practice privileges at Grand Cypress Resort because of the incident.

Investigators said Isenhour allegedly drove a golf cart toward the bird, which was about 300 yards away, to hit balls at it. When the hawk later landed within 75 yards, Isenhour's shots got closer until he eventually hit and killed it.

The bird fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils, witnesses told the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, but Isenhour said it was unrealistic to think he could hit the bird.

"That's obviously people who don't know very much about golf," he said of people who said he hit the bird intentionally. "To say it's a one-in-a-million shot for an accident like that to happen, you know, and when it did happen, I was very remorseful, very upset that it happened."

Famed golf instructor David Leadbetter told the Orlando Sentinel that he estimated the odds of hitting the bird were one in several thousand.
